For St John’s Anglican College students, Laura-Grace Nicholls and Sophie Nicholls the first year of competing in the Interschool Equestrian Competition has proven to be exciting and a great deal of fun. Both students have competed against teams of 10 or more.
The Interschool competition year ran from 1 July 2015 until 30 June 2016 and in this time individuals have the opportunity to compete in several different competitions in several different disciplines to try to qualify for both the State and National finals. Considering it was the students first year they decided to take part in eventing, combined training and show jumping.
Sophie competed at Regionals and managed to win Regional Primary School Champion for 80cm Show jumping and 80cm Combined Training. A truly outstanding effort! She also qualified for the State Championships at Burpengary in the Pre-Intro One Day Event and placed 6th overall.
Laura-Grace also took the opportunity to participate in the Regional competition, competing in strong groups for show jumping, combined training and four phase showman. She managed to achieve 9th position in her combined training out of a large group of seasoned competitors. Laura-Grace then qualified for the State competition in both Intro and Pre-Intro. We congratulate her on also achieving 3rd place in pre-intro.
To start the new competition year, the family visited Warwick Horse Trials in the last weekend of the school holidays. Laura-Grace placed 5th after the dressage phase out of a field of 33 competitors, finishing 5th overall. A difficult competition considering this field was an open class, including professional adult riders.
Sophie also competed and went clear in the cross country and clear show jumping leaving her 14th overall. A wonderful outcome as there were senior students and professional adults competing as well. Laura-Grace and Sophie Nicholls look forward to this competition year with a whole year ahead to qualify for Nationals. Good luck girls, we are very proud.
